History of the .250 Savage
Designed by Charles Newton in 1915, the .250-3000 Savage was created to deliver a high-velocity deer round. Newton favored 100-grain bullets, but Savage opted for the 87-grain bullet to achieve a 3000 fps velocity. Early Model 99 rifles had 1 in 14-inch twist barrels to stabilize the lighter bullets, but later models used 1 in 10-inch barrels to accommodate heavier projectiles.
